MP dies, fuel crisis gets a stage — nobody gets a refinery

A Queensland by-election has been called for the seat of Stafford after the sudden death of independent MP Jimmy Sullivan, with fuel policy emerging as the early political battleground.

A man's barely cold and the fuel debate's already running hotter than his memorial candle. Every by-election in this country follows the same script: tragedy creates a vacancy, the vacancy creates a contest, and the contest becomes about whatever was already polling badly. Nobody will fix the fuel crisis because of Jimmy Sullivan's death, mate. They'll just argue about it louder for six weeks, then forget.
